In the late hours of a February night in Philadelphia, a grim discovery was made in the historic Fairmount Park. Forty-nine-year-old Thurston Cooper, a Black male, and a female companion, 38-year-old Krystina Chambers, were found fatally shot along the side of Mount Pleasant Drive. The call to police came in just before 11 p.m. on Thursday, February 29, 2024, after a passerby stumbled upon the scene.
When medics arrived, both Cooper and Chambers were pronounced dead at the scene.
The nature of their injuries, with both victims having suffered gunshot wounds to the head, led investigators to describe the killings as 'execution-style'. Cooper had a single gunshot wound to the head, while Chambers had been shot in both the head and chest. The proximity of the spent shell casings to the bodies suggested the shooter or shooters were standing very close to the victims when they fired. The tranquility of the park, located near the historic Mount Pleasant Mansion, was shattered by the brutal reality of the double homicide.
The investigation into the deaths of Cooper and Chambers quickly gained momentum. Investigators learned that earlier in the evening, the pair had been at Tellups Tavern in the Olney neighborhood of Philadelphia. It was there that a dispute reportedly occurred with two other individuals who were also at the bar. Surveillance footage from the tavern showed Cooper and Chambers leaving with these two individuals in a red KIA. The same vehicle was later seen on surveillance video in the area of Mount Pleasant Drive around the time the murders were believed to have occurred.
This crucial piece of evidence led police to identify two suspects: 52-year-old Lamar Young and 56-year-old Dale Johnson. Following the release of surveillance photos to the public, Young surrendered to the authorities. Johnson was also taken into custody. Both have since been charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, and other related offenses in connection with the deaths of Thurston Cooper and Krystina Chambers. While the specific details of the argument at the bar remain under investigation, police believe it was the catalyst for the tragic events that unfolded in Fairmount Park. The case is currently pending trial.
