In the early evening of June 30, 2024, tragedy struck the city of Chester, Pennsylvania, claiming the life of 17-year-old Zaheem Sabree. A male who was an honor student and a beloved member of the Chester High School football team, Sabree was looking forward to his senior year. Instead, he was found lying on the 100 block of East 24th Street with a fatal gunshot wound to his head. Police responded to reports of gunfire in the area around 6:40 p.m. and discovered the scene.
Sabree was quickly transported to a nearby medical center, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The news of Sabree's death sent shockwaves through the community, particularly within the Chester Upland School District, where he was remembered as a dedicated athlete and a friend to many. The district mourned the loss of a young man whose spirit and dedication were considered irreplaceable, both on and off the football field where he had been a standout player since his sophomore year. As the community grieved, an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting was launched by the Chester Police Department.
Months later, the investigation led to an arrest. In January 2025, police took 18-year-old Jesse Allen Jr. into custody, charging him with first-degree murder and other related offenses in connection with Sabree's death. Allen was held at the George W. Hill Correctional Facility without bail. The narrative that emerged from prosecutors was a tragic tale of misplaced loyalty and revenge. It was alleged that Allen had orchestrated a plan to ambush an individual named Tyjohn Walker-Jones, whom Allen blamed for the killing of another friend earlier that month.
According to prosecutors, Allen recruited Sabree to assist in this planned retaliation. However, the ambush went horribly wrong, erupting into a shootout that ultimately led to Sabree being fatally shot. In a complex legal turn, Jesse Allen Jr. was charged with Sabree's murder under the theory of transferred intent. The prosecution's stance was that even if Allen didn't fire the fatal shot, he was responsible for the death because he initiated the violent confrontation that resulted in his friend's demise.
