On December 16, 2017, Lakiya Iman Adams, a 20-year-old Black mother of one from Chicago, was sitting in a vehicle with an 18-year-old man in Englewood when a dark-colored Audi rolled past and someone opened fire. It was about 3:40 p.m. in the 5600 block of South Emerald Avenue.
She was struck in the body and pronounced dead at the scene at 4:15 p.m., while the young man suffered a wound to his leg and made it to St. Bernard Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
More than a week later, authorities publicly identified the 20 year old woman as Lakiya Iman Adams, fixing the date and place of her killing and the circumstances that took her life.
Community memorial pages preserved the essentials: her name, her age, and that she was lost to gun violence in Chicago on December 16, 2017.
Detectives opened a homicide investigation, but police reported no one in custody in the immediate aftermath.
The only description released at the time was the passing vehicle, a dark-colored Audi, from which the shots were fired. No suspects were named in those initial reports.
