On a summer afternoon in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, the life of 20-year-old Dayveon Creel was tragically cut short. On August 15, 2024, during a lunch recess for an attempted homicide trial at the Northumberland County Courthouse, a violent confrontation erupted. It was in the vicinity of the courthouse, near a Weis Markets on Market Street, that Creel was fatally shot in the chest.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting sent shockwaves through the community and triggered a swift law
enforcement response. While the suspected shooter managed to flee, investigators quickly identified him as Denarii Kadeem Springs. Within hours of the incident, two alleged accomplices, Naseir Robinson and Carnel Shelborne, were taken into custody. Authorities believed the shooting was connected to a surge in gang violence that had been plaguing the city. The trial that had been in session at the time of the shooting was declared a mistrial in the wake of the violence that unfolded just outside.
A lengthy manhunt for the primary suspect, Denarii Springs, ensued, lasting for more than a year and a half. Law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service, actively pursued him, offering a reward for information leading to his capture. Finally, in February 2026, Springs was apprehended in Paterson, New Jersey, and subsequently extradited back to Northumberland County to face justice. He was charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, illegal possession of a firearm, and recklessly endangering another person.
Following Springs's capture, the legal process began to move forward. In February 2026, homicide charges against him were held for court following a preliminary hearing where witness testimony and surveillance video were presented. The evidence suggested that Springs had fired through a vehicle window, striking Creel. Prior to Springs's capture, one of his accomplices, Naseir Robinson, pleaded guilty to terroristic threats in April 2025 and was sentenced to time served. Denarii Springs remains jailed without bail as he awaits further court proceedings.
