On November 8, 2024, 19-year-old Gabriela "Gabby" Morgan of Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, was tragically killed in a violent incident involving her ex-boyfriend, 21-year-old Ricky Shannon. The events unfolded in the early morning hours when Shannon arrived at the Sassafras Terrace Apartments, where Gabby was staying with her family. Armed with a firearm, Shannon forced his way into the apartment and opened fire, fatally shooting Gabby's mother, 41-year-old Kimberly Day, and injuring her stepfather, Brian Miller, and her sister, Jennifer Day.
Prior to this tragic event, both Gabby and Shannon had filed Protection From Abuse (PFA) orders against each other. Gabby had recently moved back to her family's residence in Mount Joy after experiencing domestic violence issues with Shannon. In her PFA filing, Gabby expressed fear for her life, stating that Shannon had threatened her and hacked into her personal accounts. Despite the legal measures taken, Shannon drove nearly two hours from his residence in Altoona to Mount Joy after being served with the PFA, indicating premeditation in his actions.
After the initial shooting, Shannon forced Gabby into his pickup truck and fled the scene, leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase through multiple counties. The pursuit ended in Reed Township when Pennsylvania State Police performed a maneuver to stop the vehicle. Shannon fired at the troopers, who returned fire. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers discovered both Shannon and Gabby deceased inside. It was later determined that Gabby had sustained multiple gunshot wounds prior to the chase.
