On the evening of January 11, 2023, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Gastonia Police responded to reports of multiple gunshots in the 100 block of West Sixth Avenue in Gastonia, North Carolina. Upon arrival, officers discovered 34-year-old Braxton Devin Farquhar deceased outside his residence, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
During the investigation, authorities identified Farquhar's 23-year-old stepson, Christopher Lee Hill, as the primary suspect.
Hill had previously resided at the West Sixth Avenue home. The motive behind the shooting remained unclear, and initial reports indicated that Farquhar's wife, Hill's mother, was asleep inside the house at the time of the incident.
Following the issuance of a first-degree murder warrant, Hill surrendered to police on January 12, 2023, around 2 p.m. He was subsequently taken into custody and held without bond. During his initial court appearance, Hill alleged that he had been subjected to verbal and physical abuse by Farquhar, stating, "That man abused me, verbally and physically." Despite these claims, the prosecution highlighted that Farquhar was unarmed at the time of the shooting and had sustained 17 gunshot wounds, including several to his back.
Neighbors and acquaintances provided mixed accounts of Hill's character. Some described him as a "gentle giant" who typically avoided confrontation, expressing shock at the events. One neighbor remarked, "Chris is not a bad guy. He's not. Not at all."
This incident marked the first homicide in Gastonia for the year 2023. As the legal proceedings continued, the community grappled with the tragic loss and the complex familial dynamics that may have contributed to the fatal encounter.
