On January 31, 2023, at approximately 1:30 a.m., Durham police responded to a shooting in the 4100 block of Sudbury Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered four men with gunshot wounds. Jason Epps, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene, while 58-year-old Terence Kimble succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The two other men sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were hospitalized.
Following an investigation, authorities arrested two brothers in connection with the shootings. Deonte Devon Percell, 28, and Dominique La'Ron Percell, 27, both of Durham, were charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflicting serious injury, two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Deonte Percell was taken into custody and held without bond in the Durham County Jail, while Dominique Percell was already incarcerated in another county, with warrant service pending.
The Durham Police Department indicated that the incident appeared to be isolated. As of the latest reports, the investigation remains active, and no further details have been released regarding the motive or circumstances leading up to the shooting.
