On February 12, 2023, 27-year-old African American male Marquavious JaQuan "Jay Rock" White was fatally shot in Pineville, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 1 a.m. near Industrial Drive, close to the intersection of Interstate 485 and South Boulevard. White was found deceased inside a vehicle, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. A juvenile who was with him at the time of the shooting managed to escape and seek help.
Authorities quickly identified 19-year-old Brandon M.
Hynson as the suspect in the shooting. Hynson was arrested later that same day in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and discharging a firearm within town limits.
Marquavious White, a resident of Chester, South Carolina, was a father and is remembered by his family and community. Funeral services were held on February 20, 2023, at Brown Chapel AME Zion Church in Chester, with burial following at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
