On April 5, 2023, Melvin Phillips, a 48-year-old resident of Norlina, North Carolina, was found deceased from a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities discovered his body lying face down in the yard of 206 High Street in Norlina. Witnesses reported that prior to the shooting, Phillips had been involved in an argument with two men. He had approached them to confront them about shooting guns in the area, which led to a fatal altercation.
