On April 5, 2023, Melvin Phillips, a 48-year-old resident of Norlina, North Carolina, was found deceased from a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities discovered his body lying face down in the yard of 206 High Street in Norlina. Witnesses reported that prior to the shooting, Phillips had been involved in an argument with two men. He had approached them to confront them about shooting guns in the area, which led to a fatal altercation.
Following the incident, law enforcement officials arrested two individuals in connection with Phillips' death. Deon Howard and Nathan Daniel, both in their mid-20s, were charged with first-degree murder and taken into custody. Additionally, a woman named Tammy Krupa was charged with obstruction of justice and subsequently released on bond. A juvenile was also petitioned for accessory after the fact.
Melvin Phillips was remembered by his family and community during a Homegoing Celebration held on April 18, 2023, at United Solid Rock Faith Ministries in Norlina. He is survived by his son, Melvin Clincy; daughter, Melayshia Phillips; fiancée, Jennifer Tribble; and her daughter, Maya Bond. Phillips' death was a significant loss to his loved ones and the local community.
