In the early hours of April 16, 2023, Durham police responded to a shooting incident in the 900 block of Clarendon Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered two male victims with gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services transported one victim to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the second victim, identified as 37-year-old Daryl Paige of Rougemont, North Carolina, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following an investigation, authorities arrested 32-year-old Durham resident Marcus Dontae Carpenter on May 8, 2023. Carpenter was apprehended in the 1300 block of South Roxboro Street and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Paige's death, as well as attempted murder for the shooting of the second victim, who remained in critical condition at that time. Carpenter was held without bond at the Durham County Jail.
The Durham Police Department indicated that the shootings did not appear to be random acts.
