On May 17, 2023, 47-year-old William Ronnie Oliver Jr. was fatally shot outside his residence on Progressive Church Road in Princeton, North Carolina. The Johnston County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call at approximately 7:25 p.m. from 73-year-old Joe Mitchell of Old Smithfield Road, who reported the shooting. Mitchell informed deputies that he had been involved in an altercation with Oliver, during which he discharged his firearm, resulting in Oliver's death.
