On May 21, 2023, 41-year-old Christopher Lee Smith of Madison, North Carolina, was found deceased in the parking lot of Ramon's Shell & Foodmart on US Highway 220. A store clerk discovered his body around 7:15 a.m., and upon arrival, Rockingham County Sheriff's deputies determined that Smith had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators believe the incident occurred approximately three hours earlier, around 4:00 a.m.
Evidence suggests that Smith was involved in a physical altercation with two African American males who arrived at the gas station in a light-colored four-door sedan. Following the confrontation, Smith was shot multiple times.
Despite the release of surveillance images depicting the suspect vehicle, no arrests have been made in connection with Smith's death. As of May 2024, Rockingham County investigators continue to seek leads and urge anyone with information to come forward.
Smith's passing has left a profound impact on his family and the Madison community. He is survived by his two sons, Cameron and Landen Smith, as well as his mother, stepfather, siblings, nieces, and nephews. A memorial service was held on June 12, 2023, at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel in Madison to honor his memory.
