On June 11, 2023, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 2600 block of Southwest Boulevard in west Charlotte. Upon arrival, they discovered 36-year-old Anthony Dewayne Haley, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Tragically, Haley was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the days following the incident, CMPD's Homicide Unit conducted an intensive investigation, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. On June 15, 2023, their efforts led to the identification and arrest of 28-year-old James Dontel Grier. Grier was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. After his arrest, he was transported to the Law Enforcement Center in Uptown Charlotte for questioning before being transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
The arrest brought some measure of closure to Haley's family, who had been notified of the developments. CMPD emphasized that the investigation remained active and ongoing, encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward. They urged individuals to contact Detective Dossett directly or to provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
This tragic event was part of a particularly violent weekend in Charlotte, during which multiple shootings resulted in several fatalities and injuries, underscoring the ongoing challenges of gun violence in the community.
