On July 5, 2023, at approximately 4:17 a.m., Fayetteville police responded to reports of gunfire in the 800 block of Hilton Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered 20-year-old Jason Lamar Smith Jr. lying in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other men were also injured during the incident: one sustained critical injuries, while the other suffered non-life-threatening wounds.
