On July 5, 2023, at approximately 6:20 p.m., officers from the Lumberton Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in the 1300 block of North Walnut Street in Lumberton, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 44-year-old Derrick V. Hester and 35-year-old Ashley Hunt inside a vehicle that had veered off the road into a yard.
