On August 2, 2023, at approximately 9:25 a.m., the Wake County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported shooting in the 8200 block of Fieldcrest Lane in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina. Upon arrival, deputies discovered 49-year-old Robert William "Robbie" Barton with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that Barton and his landlord, 63-year-old Jeffrey Hoffman, had a contentious relationship, including a recent legal dispute over
unpaid rent. In early June 2023, Hoffman filed a lawsuit against Barton for $500 in unpaid rent; however, the case was dismissed on June 26, 2023.
On the morning of the incident, Hoffman allegedly shot Barton following an altercation. When deputies arrived, Hoffman exited the residence unarmed and was taken into custody without incident. He was subsequently charged with murder and booked into the Wake County Detention Center.
Robert Barton, known as "Robbie" to family and friends, was born on March 6, 1974, in Greensboro, North Carolina. At the time of his death, he was pursuing a degree in construction management at Wake Technical Community College and was an active member of his local church community. A proud Marine Corps veteran, Robbie was remembered for his vibrant personality, sense of humor, and dedication to advocating for fellow veterans. His hobbies included fishing and cheering for Duke University sports teams.
The tragic incident has prompted discussions about tenant-landlord relationships and the importance of conflict resolution. As the legal proceedings against Hoffman continue, the community mourns the loss of Robbie Barton, reflecting on his contributions and the void left by his untimely passing.
