Raekwon Shannon, a 19-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on January 2, 2016, in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina. The Harnett County Sheriff's Office reported that the shooting resulted
from a domestic dispute between Shannon and his stepfather, 40-year-old Rico McConico. Witnesses and family members indicated that McConico, who had a history of mental instability following his time as a private contractor in Iraq, shot Shannon during an argument. Shannon was taken to Central Harnett Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
McConico was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with first-degree murder. He was held at the Harnett County Detention Center without bond and made his first court appearance on January 4, 2016.
