On August 20, 2023, at approximately 2:59 p.m., Gastonia Police Department officers responded to a shooting at Faith, Hope, and Love Ministries, located at 418 N. Oakland Street in Gastonia, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 57-year-old Freddie Lee Byrd suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency medical services pronounced Byrd deceased at the scene.
Investigations revealed that both Byrd and the suspect, 56-year-old Donald Ray Beatty, resided in neighboring tents on the ministry's property, which serves as a shelter for homeless individuals. An argument between the two men escalated, culminating in Beatty fatally shooting Byrd. Authorities arrested Beatty at the scene, charging him with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is currently held at the Gaston County Jail without bond.
