On September 17, 2023, 34-year-old Gregory Thomas "Tommy" Whaley was fatally shot in Burgaw, North Carolina. The Pender County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting and discovered Whaley with critical injuries; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following an investigation, authorities arrested 28-year-old Brandon Lee Smith in connection with Whaley's death. Smith was charged with second-degree murder and booked into the Pender County Jail under a $500,000 secured bond.
