On the evening of September 18, 2023, in Spring Lake, North Carolina, 42-year-old Angela Gwyn was fatally shot while inside a vehicle with three children. The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. near South Sixth Street and N.C. Highway 210. All four occupants sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where Ms. Gwyn succumbed to her injuries.
The children, whose identities were not disclosed, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were expected to recover.
Ms. Gwyn, a resident of Cameron, North Carolina, was known for her dedication to her family and her work at Coremark. She is survived by her mother, Deborah Yow Gwyn, and her four sons: Jerimiah Gwyn, Beneraldo Benitez, Jovanni Benitez, and Alexander Benitez. Her funeral services were held at Euphronia Presbyterian Church, followed by burial in the church cemetery.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Spring Lake Police stated that the incident did not appear to be random and assured the public there was no ongoing threat to the community. Authorities urged anyone with information to come forward to aid in the investigation. Despite these appeals, as of December 23, 2024, no arrests have been reported, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with Ms. Gwyn's death.
The tragic event has left the Spring Lake community in mourning, with local officials emphasizing the need for unity and vigilance against violence. Mayor Kia Anthony remarked on the importance of creating a safe environment for all residents, highlighting the incident as a stark reminder of the work needed to achieve that goal.
