On November 5, 2023, at approximately 12:45 a.m., Durham police responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of West Morgan Street and Watts Street, a bustling area known for its nightlife and proximity to Duke University's East Campus. Upon arrival, officers discovered 24-year-old Twanda Shant’e Parker suffering from gunshot wounds. She was promptly transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Twanda, affectionately known as "Lil Mama," was a vibrant presence in her community. Born on September 6, 1999, in Durham, she was educated in the Durham Public School System and had been employed at Duke Medical Center. She was renowned for her radiant smile, love for dancing, and deep affection for her family, especially her 2-year-old son, Zyeir.
Tragically, Zyeir has now lost both parents to gun violence; his father, Blake Burnette, was fatally shot in July 2022. Twanda's death has left her family and the Durham community in mourning, with loved ones remembering her as a beautiful, headstrong individual who brought joy to those around her.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Twanda Parker's death. The Durham Police Department continues to investigate the case and urges anyone with information to contact Investigator B. Garth at 919-560-4440 ext. 29313 or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.
