On December 14, 2023, 26-year-old Zachary Taylor Locklear of Maxton, North Carolina, was fatally shot at 79 Dreamcatcher Drive in Pembroke. Responding to reports of a shooting around 7:00 p.m., Robeson County Sheriff's deputies found Locklear with a gunshot wound. He was transported to UNC Health Southeastern Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The following day, December 15, 2023, 26-year-old Quinton Robert Brayboy of Lumberton surrendered to authorities. He was charged with first-degree murder and discharging a weapon within an enclosure to incite fear in connection with Locklear's death. At the time of this incident, Brayboy was out on bond for a previous second-degree murder charge from March 2023, related to the death of 44-year-old Coleman Fields in Lumberton.
Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins expressed concerns about Brayboy being released on bond for the earlier murder charge, emphasizing the risks posed to public safety.
