On the morning of February 8, 2024, at approximately 6:54 a.m., Durham police responded to a report of a gunshot wound in the 4500 block of Denfield Street in northern Durham. Upon arrival, officers discovered 40-year-old Laron Dante Allen suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency Medical Services pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Initially, the investigation did not yield any immediate suspects, and authorities treated the incident as isolated.
They urged anyone with information to contact Investigator C. Robinson or CrimeStoppers.
Subsequent investigative efforts led to a breakthrough when, on February 29, 2024, 41-year-old Darrell Jermaine Hart was arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina, by the Carolina Regional Task Force and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Hart was charged with murder in connection to Allen's death.
Further reports revealed that Hart had a criminal history spanning two decades, including convictions for drug charges, larceny, breaking and entering, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and second-degree kidnapping. Additionally, Hart faced charges for another homicide that occurred two days after Allen's death, indicating a potential pattern of violent behavior.
As of the latest available information, Hart remains in custody, awaiting trial for the charges related to the deaths of both Allen and another victim. The community continues to mourn the loss of Allen, remembered by family and friends as a beloved individual whose life was tragically cut short.
