On a tragic evening in March 2019, the life of 36-year-old Brock Neibuhr, a White male from Dike, Iowa, was cut short. On March 22, what began as a visit to his father's home in rural Fairbank ended in a shocking act of violence that would leave a family shattered and a community in disbelief. Brock, a beloved husband and father, was shot and killed while he was sitting on the couch, watching television.
The initial report to the Buchanan County Dispatch was for a stabbing, but when
Bremer County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the residence, they discovered that Brock Neibuhr had suffered a fatal gunshot wound. His father, 59-year-old Daniel Niebuhr, was at the scene and, according to law enforcement, confessed to shooting his son in the head. Brock was pronounced dead at the scene. The motive for the killing was not immediately clear, though it was later revealed that Brock had gone to his father's house to help him, despite his wife's concerns about her father-in-law's mental state.
Daniel Niebuhr was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. During his time in the Bremer County Jail, he reportedly exhibited uncooperative and belligerent behavior, at one point sustaining a self-inflicted hand injury and refusing medical treatment. His attorney raised concerns about his client's mental health and ability to communicate effectively.
Ultimately, Daniel Niebuhr was found not guilty by reason of insanity. A forensic psychiatrist testified that he had diagnosed Daniel with major depressive disorder with psychotic features, and that at the time of the shooting, he did not understand the difference between right and wrong. Following the verdict, he was committed to a mental health facility for treatment. Brock Neibuhr was remembered by his wife as a devoted family man who loved his wife and daughter more than anything.
