On March 2, 2024, a tragic shooting occurred at The Commons at Pembroke apartment complex near the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. The incident resulted in the deaths of 19-year-old Nicholas Logan, a resident of Lumberton, North Carolina, and 22-year-old Cameron Taylor, a sophomore nursing student at UNC Pembroke. Four others were injured during the altercation.
Nicholas Logan, born on July 30, 2004, in Robeson County, was known for his outgoing personality and a heart of gold. He worked in construction and was remembered by friends and family as loving, down-to-earth, and possessing a smile that could light up any room.
Following the incident, authorities arrested 20-year-old Kalon Pernell Dial of Pembroke. Dial was charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Logan and Taylor, as well as three counts of attempted first-degree murder for the injuries sustained by others at the scene.
He was taken into custody at the Robeson County Detention Center without bond.
The shooting prompted increased concerns about safety within the UNC Pembroke community. In response, university officials implemented stricter measures, including bans on parties and weapons both on and off campus, to enhance security and prevent future tragedies.
