On March 8, 2024, at approximately 1:20 a.m., a tragic shooting occurred at Culture Lounge, located at 1707 Spring Garden Street in Greensboro, North Carolina. The incident resulted in the deaths of 28-year-old Devonte Bernard Johnson and 33-year-old Mohsin Malik Hamid. A woman was also injured and transported to the hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
Reports indicate that around 100 patrons were inside the club when a disturbance escalated into gunfire.
Witnesses suggest that Hamid, who had recently celebrated his 33rd birthday, acted selflessly by attempting to intervene during the altercation. Tragically, he was fatally shot in the process.
The Greensboro Police Department, along with UNCG Campus Police and Guilford County EMS, responded swiftly to the scene, administering life-saving measures to the victims. Investigators have stated that this was not a random act of violence, implying that the individuals involved may have had prior interactions leading up to the incident.
In the aftermath, Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan expressed concerns over the frequency of violent incidents in local nightlife venues. She mentioned that the city had previously engaged with Culture Lounge management regarding safety protocols and emphasized the need for accountability among club owners and promoters to ensure the safety of patrons.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers at (336) 373-1000. Community members continue to mourn the loss of Johnson and Hamid, both remembered as individuals who were deeply loved and respected within their circles.
