On March 9, 2024, 21-year-old Abijah Philemon Barkley was fatally shot in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. near the 400 block of Fairwood Avenue in the Westover Division. Initially, a witness reported a suspected overdose after observing Barkley in distress. Upon arrival, paramedics discovered he had sustained a gunshot wound. Despite being transported to a hospital, Barkley succumbed to his injuries.
Barkley was a dedicated father to his four-month-old daughter and worked two jobs to support his family: overnight shifts at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and daytime hours as a food delivery driver. His untimely death left his family devastated, with his sister, Malaysia Barkley, expressing profound grief over the loss.
Following an investigation, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) identified a 17-year-old male suspect in connection with the shooting. The juvenile was arrested on April 2, 2024, and charged with murder. Initially, Judge Aretha Blake released the suspect on a $300,000 unsecured bond, allowing him to remain free without immediate payment. This decision sparked outrage among Barkley's family and community members, who felt it was unjust given the circumstances.
Subsequently, the suspect's bond was revoked, and he was ordered to be tried as an adult. Prosecutors revealed that the suspect and an associate had planned to rob Barkley of his firearm and money.
