On April 26, 2024, in Waynesville, North Carolina, 85-year-old Ellen Rhodes Hoyle was found deceased alongside her husband, 89-year-old Richard Stuart Hoyle, in their residence at 15 Mississippi Avenue. The Waynesville Police Department responded to a 911 call made by Richard Hoyle around 11 a.m., during which he indicated that gunshots would be fired.
Upon arrival, officers heard a single gunshot and subsequently discovered both individuals deceased from gunshot wounds in an apparent murder-suicide.
Neighbors reported that both Ellen and Richard Hoyle had been experiencing significant health issues, with Ellen battling cancer. These circumstances may have contributed to the tragic outcome. The couple had purchased their home in the Hazelwood community in August 2020 and were known in the neighborhood.
