In the early evening of January 11, 2016, a burst of gunfire shattered the calm outside the Kissingbower Package Shop in Augusta, Georgia, leaving a 34-year-old man, James J. Sims III, fatally wounded. The incident, which marked the first homicide of the year in the city, occurred at approximately 5:21 p.m. when Sims was shot at least once in the torso.
Known to his friends by the nickname 'Mel,' the African American man's life was tragically cut short in an act of violence that
initially left investigators with few leads. While the shooting took place outside a liquor store, authorities indicated that the business itself did not seem to be directly connected to the incident.
