On May 7, 2024, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Bertie County Sheriff's deputies responded to a drive-by shooting at the residence of 68-year-old Howard Ward, located in the 700 block of Blackjack Road near Kelford, North Carolina. During the incident, Ward was struck in the head by a bullet while inside his home. He was immediately transported to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, where he remained in critical condition.
