On May 16, 2024, 33-year-old Patrick Monta Bland was fatally shot in the Sterling Pointe community of Winterville, North Carolina. Responding to reports of multiple gunshots around 7 p.m., Greenville Police Department officers found Bland near building 3909, where he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Investigations revealed that the shooting resulted from an ongoing dispute between neighbors.
Bland was visiting 32-year-old Deontre Markee Taylor at the time and was not the intended target. Taylor, a resident of Winterville, was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and discharging a weapon into occupied property. Another individual, 20-year-old Kentavious Terell Condery of Farmville, was arrested and charged with an open count of murder in connection with Bland's death.
A few days later, on May 20, a third suspect, 19-year-old Zaquavion Carney of Winterville, was apprehended and charged with murder. All three suspects were detained at the Pitt County Detention Center. The Greenville Police Department indicated that Bland's death was a tragic consequence of a neighborhood dispute, emphasizing that he was an unintended victim in the altercation.
Bland, a resident of Grifton, North Carolina, is survived by his parents, children, siblings, and his girlfriend, who is the mother of his children. Funeral services were held on May 25, 2024, at Heath Chapel Abundant Life Ministries in Kinston, followed by interment at Lodge Hall Cemetery in Snow Hill.
