On February 19, 2023, at approximately 4 p.m., 17-year-old Jayden Blackmon was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting on Lynn Street near Freedom Drive in Charlotte, North Carolina. Blackmon was socializing in the parking lot of an apartment complex when a vehicle drove by, and its occupants opened fire, striking him multiple times. Emergency responders transported Blackmon to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In the days following the incident, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) conducted an investigation that led to the arrest of two suspects. On February 22, 2023, 18-year-old Gerry Martez Burns Jr. was apprehended and charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and possession of a stolen vehicle. Subsequently, on March 1, 2023, 18-year-old Curtis Ray Wilson III turned himself in to authorities and was also charged with murder in connection with Blackmon's death.
Community members expressed deep sorrow and concern over the loss of such a young life. A vigil organized by Mothers of Murdered Offspring was held at Camp Greene Park to honor Blackmon's memory. Speakers at the vigil emphasized the need for collective action to address the rising violence affecting the youth in Charlotte. Tiffany Williams, a family friend who had previously lost her own son to gun violence, remarked on the tragedy of young individuals being deprived of the opportunity to reach adulthood.
The arrests of Burns and Wilson brought some measure of relief to the community, though the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. CMPD continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Blackmon's death, urging anyone with additional information to come forward. The incident has intensified discussions about the prevalence of gun violence in Charlotte and the imperative to implement effective anti-violence programs to safeguard the city's youth.
