On May 22, 2024, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call in the 7500 block of North Tryon Street in Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered a vehicle that had collided with the rear of a Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) bus. Inside the vehicle, the driver, identified as 20-year-old Conner O’Neil Yancy, was found deceased with an apparent gunshot wound.
A female passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries related to the crash and was transported to a local hospital. The CATS bus driver, the sole occupant of the bus, was not injured.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Yancy was the victim of a drive-by shooting. Reports indicate that while driving on North Tryon Street, another vehicle approached, and an unknown assailant fired into Yancy's car, fatally wounding him. Following the shooting, Yancy's vehicle inadvertently crashed into the rear of the CATS bus.
