On May 23, 2024, in Bailey, North Carolina, 63-year-old Charles Dewey Earp was found deceased in his home on Liles Road. Responding to a welfare check around 12:44 p.m., Nash County Sheriff's deputies discovered Earp in a rear bedroom, having suffered a fatal shotgun wound to the head. The residence exhibited signs of a struggle, with blood present and an overwhelming chemical odor permeating the premises. Deputies noted that chemicals had been deliberately poured throughout the house, and a pot containing an unknown liquid was found on the stove, contributing to the hazardous environment.
The primary suspect in this case was Earp's son, 37-year-old Brandon Charles Earp, who resided with his father but was absent upon the deputies' arrival. Authorities initiated an extensive search, utilizing the North Carolina State Highway Patrol's aviation unit. After more than four hours, Brandon was apprehended near the home, found hiding under brush in a tree line with camouflage face paint. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with first-degree murder.
Sheriff Keith Stone reported that Brandon exhibited disoriented behavior during his arrest, claiming he was attempting to flee from aliens. Investigators believe he poured chemicals throughout the house after his father's death, possibly while experiencing hallucinations. Further investigation revealed a history of domestic issues between the father and son, with Brandon having prior arrests related to larceny, assault, and breaking and entering. Additionally, he had a known history of drug abuse and mental health issues, including involuntary commitments.
