On June 18, 2024, at approximately 11:45 p.m., Shelby Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting on Bridges Street near Shelby High School in Shelby, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they found 40-year-old Latoya Cornick Walker suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention, Walker was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Walker had been involved in an argument with 29-year-old Johnny William Lockhart III shortly before the shooting. During the altercation, Lockhart allegedly produced a firearm, leading to the fatal shooting of Walker.
Following the incident, Lockhart fled the scene, prompting a manhunt by local law enforcement agencies. On June 20, 2024, authorities located and arrested Lockhart without incident. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. Lockhart was booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center, where he awaited trial without bond.
Latoya Walker was remembered by family and friends as a joyful person who got along with others and loved everyone. She was employed with Terrabella Senior Living facility in Shelby for more than 10 years, helping patients. Walker attended Shelby High School and was taking online courses to obtain her GED. She enjoyed tending to her garden, spending time with her four dogs, dancing, and making people laugh. Her funeral services were held on June 29, 2024, at Changer's Church, followed by burial at Sunset Cemetery.
The tragic loss of Latoya Walker has deeply affected the Shelby community, highlighting the devastating impact of gun violence. As the legal proceedings against Lockhart continue, the community remains united in seeking justice for Walker and supporting her grieving family.
