On October 20, 2024, at approximately 8:25 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to a reported assault with a deadly weapon at a recording studio on North Davidson Street in Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered two individuals with multiple gunshot wounds. One of the victims, identified as 23-year-old Joseph "Jo" McAfee, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other individual sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident originated from a robbery attempt within the recording studio, leading to an exchange of gunfire between at least two individuals. Detectives have conducted interviews with all parties involved and, as of now, no charges have been filed. CMPD has stated that they are not seeking any additional suspects and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The case details have been presented to the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office for independent review to ensure proper application of the law.
Joseph McAfee, known affectionately as "Jo," was a local rapper and entrepreneur from Monroe, North Carolina. Born on November 14, 2000, he was recognized for his vibrant personality, kind-hearted nature, and dedication to uplifting others. He is survived by his parents, Lakisha McAfee and Douglas Simpson, as well as his siblings and extended family. A visitation was held on October 25, 2024, at Blakely Funeral Home & Cremations in Monroe, followed by private services.
