In the summer of 2023, a promising young life was abruptly cut short on the streets of Buffalo, New York. Eighteen-year-old Columbus E. Brooks Jr., a Black male known affectionately as 'Lumbo,' was fatally shot on the evening of July 5th. The incident occurred near Woodlawn Avenue and Dupont Street, a place where he was reportedly playing basketball.
Friends and family remember him as a joyful individual with aspirations of becoming a parole officer or a firefighter, a young man with a bright future who was not involved in gang activity.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 9:27 p.m., and first responders arrived shortly thereafter. Despite their efforts to treat his gunshot wound to the abdomen at the scene, a significant amount of time elapsed before he was transported to Erie County Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 10:10 p.m. The sequence of events on that warm July evening has since become the subject of intense scrutiny and legal action.
In the aftermath of his death, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the shooting. Crime Stoppers WNY has offered a reward of up to $7,500 for information that could lead to an arrest. The focus of the public narrative, however, has largely shifted to the emergency response on the night of the incident.
Brooks' sister, Athenia Cyrus, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Buffalo and the ambulance service, AMR, alleging that negligence contributed to her brother's death. The lawsuit claims that there was a 30-minute delay in transporting him to the hospital, a delay his family believes cost him his life. The suit contends that had he been transported immediately to the waiting trauma team at the hospital, he would have had a greater chance of survival. This legal battle has brought to the forefront broader community concerns about disparities in emergency medical services in different neighborhoods. The family and their supporters have held rallies, not only to seek justice for Columbus but also to advocate for systemic changes to prevent similar tragedies.
