On the evening of July 27, 2023, Dominique Green, a 28-year-old male, was shot and killed in his own home in Kingston, New York. The fatal incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Prospect Street and Greenkill Avenue. The event that tragically cut Green's life short stemmed from a domestic dispute earlier in the day. Green's ex-girlfriend, Shaliza Dhanraj, had gone to his apartment to retrieve her belongings and got into a physical altercation with his current girlfriend.
After Green physically removed her from the residence, Dhanraj returned later that night.
Accompanied by two men from the Schenectady area, Nyqwuan Monroe and Maliek Fredericks, Dhanraj returned to Green's apartment. The trio forced their way inside and began to assault Green's girlfriend. When Green tried to intervene to protect her, he was shot by Monroe. After being shot in the neck, Green collapsed and died in the backyard of his residence. The three assailants then fled the scene, traveling back to the Schenectady area.
The Kingston Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies, launched a swift investigation. The following day, all three suspects were apprehended. Shaliza Dhanraj, 26, Maliek Fredericks, 25, and Nyqwan Monroe, 25, were arrested and charged with second-degree murder and burglary. Monroe, identified as the shooter, faced additional charges of intentional murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Investigators recovered the firearm used in the killing, which Monroe had given to one of his co-defendants to dispose of. DNA evidence found on the gun and a bullet inside it matched Monroe.
The legal proceedings saw Monroe initially plead guilty to second-degree murder in January 2024. However, he later withdrew his plea, claiming he felt pressured, which led to a jury trial. During the trial, both Dhanraj and Fredericks testified against him. In January 2025, a jury found Nyqwuan Monroe guilty of two counts of second-degree murder, three counts of burglary, and criminal possession of a weapon. He was subsequently sentenced to 53 years to life in state prison. For their roles in the crime, Shaliza Dhanraj was sentenced to up to three years in prison on a burglary count, and Maliek Fredericks received a sentence of three-and-a-half years for burglary.
