In Kingston, New York, a young man's life was cut tragically short in what police have described as a devastating accident. Raymond D. Robinson, a 19-year-old Black male, died on March 18, 2021, from a gunshot wound he sustained the previous day. Remembered by loved ones as 'Ray Ray,' he was known for his humor and vibrant personality.
The incident that led to Robinson's death occurred on the afternoon of March 17, 2021, inside an apartment at 358 Broadway.
According to the Kingston Police Department, Robinson was mishandling a gun when it accidentally discharged, striking him. First responders arrived at the scene to find him in critical condition and immediately began administering medical aid. He was initially transported to HealthAlliance Hospital's Broadway Campus before being airlifted to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Robinson succumbed to his injuries the following day.
In the wake of the shooting, an investigation was launched to determine the events that led to the fatal incident. The investigation concluded that the shooting was accidental, and there was no foul play involved. The handgun involved in the incident was not registered and did not belong to Robinson. The owner of the firearm, identified as 20-year-old Oryin Leonard, who resided at the apartment where the shooting took place, was arrested. Leonard was charged with the misdemeanor of unlawful possession of a weapon.
