In a quiet Liverpool, New York neighborhood on the evening of April 14, 2024, a routine police follow-up escalated into a tragic event that claimed the lives of two dedicated law enforcement officers. Syracuse Police Officer Michael E. Jensen, a 29-year-old male, was one of the officers who lost his life in the sudden and violent ambush. The night began when Officer Jensen and a fellow officer attempted to pull over a vehicle in Syracuse.
The driver, later identified as 33-year-old Christopher Murphy, fled and the license plate led officers to his home on Darien Drive in Liverpool.
As Syracuse police officers and Onondaga County sheriff's deputies converged on the residence, the situation took a deadly turn. Murphy, armed with an illegally modified AR-15 rifle, opened fire on the officers from his home. Onondaga County Sheriff's Lt. Michael Hoosock was fatally shot in the backyard of a neighboring property. Murphy then moved to the front of his house and continued his assault, firing at the responding officers. It was during this barrage of gunfire that Officer Jensen was struck by a fatal shot to the chest. Despite being mortally wounded, Officer Jensen heroically returned fire, firing 18 shots and emptying his magazine. Another officer on the scene also returned fire, and Murphy was ultimately shot and killed.
The aftermath of the two-minute shootout left the community in mourning and prompted a thorough investigation by the New York State Attorney General's office. The investigation confirmed that the officers' use of deadly force against Murphy was justified. A toxicology report revealed that Murphy had both alcohol and cocaine in his system at the time of the incident. Investigators also discovered racist and pro-Nazi images on his phone, though his exact motive for the ambush remains unclear. The tragic loss of Officer Jensen, a respected member of the Syracuse Police Department for over two years, was deeply felt by his family, friends, and the entire law enforcement community. He was remembered as a kind and caring individual with a 'goofy nature' and a 'dry sense of humor' who had a positive impact on all who knew him.
