In the early morning hours of January 22, 2023, the life of 27-year-old Breana C. Conner, a Black female from Sikeston, Missouri, was tragically cut short. Just after 3 a.m., officers from the Sikeston Department of Public Safety responded to reports of multiple gunshots in the 800 block of Southwest Street. Upon arrival, they discovered a grim scene inside a residence where Breana and her husband, 33-year-old Kiara D.
Haynes, had been shot.
Emergency medical services were rendered at the scene, but Haynes was pronounced dead. Breana Conner was gravely wounded and rushed to a local hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she later succumbed to her injuries. The double homicide prompted an intensive investigation by the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, with the assistance of the Major Case Squad.
The investigation led authorities to identify a suspect in the killings. Cornelius M. David, a 33-year-old from Georgia, was identified as the alleged perpetrator. With the cooperation of law enforcement officials in Atlanta, Georgia, David was apprehended. The New Madrid County Prosecutor's Office filed formal charges against him, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Following his arrest, David was held on a no-bond warrant, awaiting extradition back to Missouri to face the charges. While an arrest has been made, the investigation into the double homicide of Breana C. Conner and Kiara D. Haynes remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
