In the waning daylight of a December evening, a seemingly routine traffic stop escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of a young police officer. On December 13, 2018, Edgar Isidro Flores, a 24-year-old male officer with the DeKalb County Police Department, was fatally shot in the line of duty just east of Atlanta. The events unfolded at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Candler Road, near Interstate 20.

Officer Flores had initiated a traffic stop, but the situation quickly deteriorated when the driver fled on foot. Flores pursued the suspect, who then opened fire, mortally wounding the officer. The gunman continued to flee and hid behind a nearby business.

Responding officers, including a K-9 unit, tracked the suspect to his hiding place. As they closed in, the suspect again fired his weapon, striking the police dog. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect at the scene. The suspect was later identified as Brandon Taylor, a man in his 20s or 30s. Both Officer Flores and the suspect were transported to an Atlanta hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The police K-9 was critically injured in the exchange but was reported to be in stable condition after receiving veterinary care. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
