On the afternoon of March 7, 2023, a violent altercation unfolded within an apartment building in the Wells-Goodfellow neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Eddie Johnson III, a 30-year-old male, was inside a residence located on the 1600 block of Burd Avenue when he became involved in a domestic dispute. According to investigators, the disagreement reportedly involved the mother of his child.
As the situation escalated, two other men intervened in the conflict, leading to a deadly confrontation.
During the exchange, Johnson was struck by gunfire, sustaining a critical gunshot wound to his torso. St. Louis Metropolitan Police officers responded to the scene just before 2:45 p.m., discovering Johnson unconscious and not breathing inside the building. Despite the arrival of emergency personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspects had already fled the area before law enforcement arrived, prompting homicide detectives to cordon off the location, which included portions of a parking lot behind a former school building converted into apartments.
The investigation moved quickly, and police identified a suspect shortly after the incident. On the following Wednesday, 28-year-old Travon Stevenson turned himself in to detectives at the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Division. Stevenson was subsequently arrested and faced serious legal repercussions for his alleged role in the killing. Prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Following his surrender and charging, he was held without bond as the legal process against him commenced.
