On the evening of July 23, 2023, deputies from the Cass County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a disturbance in the rural community of Freeman, Missouri. Around 7:38 p.m., authorities arrived at the scene on Lakeview Drive within the Lake Annette area following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered 65-year-old Edward Demoussett lying in the roadway. Although another individual was present and attempting to administer CPR, emergency medical personnel pronounced the male victim dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations by law enforcement suggested that the fatal incident stemmed from an argument that had rapidly escalated. While processing the scene, deputies detained a person of interest who was transported to the sheriff's office for questioning. This individual was held temporarily as investigators reviewed the evidence collected from the roadway and the surrounding area.
