On the morning of September 28, 2023, authorities in St. Louis County were alerted to gunfire by a ShotSpotter detection system near the intersection of Winkler and Kappel drives in the Castle Point neighborhood. Upon arriving at the scene around 7:30 a.m., officers discovered 57-year-old male Earl 'Junebug' Jones Jr. lying unresponsive on the ground. Jones, a resident of the nearby Dellwood area, had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
