On February 22, 2024, at approximately 12:22 a.m., Springfield police responded to reports of gunshots near the intersection of South Campbell Avenue and Walnut Lawn Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a potential crime scene in the roadway. Shortly thereafter, at 12:36 a.m., 21-year-old Trevin Dicks and 19-year-old Reggie Carey arrived at Cox South Hospital with gunshot wounds; both succumbed to their injuries a short time later.
