On the evening of April 13, 2024, a violent altercation erupted at Wilbur Young Park in Blue Springs, Missouri, resulting in the tragic death of 20-year-old Karmello Matlock. Police officers were dispatched to the scene at 1100 Southeast Adams Dairy Parkway just after 10:30 p.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, authorities discovered two gunshot victims in different locations within the park; one individual was found in a parking lot near the volleyball courts, while Karmello was
located near a basketball court. Emergency medical personnel transported Karmello to CenterPoint Medical Center in Independence, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.
The investigation revealed that the shooting stemmed from a fistfight involving a group of individuals at the popular park. Witnesses reported that the physical altercation escalated rapidly when firearms were introduced. Surveillance footage reviewed by detectives reportedly captured the sequence of events, showing the confrontation turning deadly. Alongside Karmello, another young man, 19-year-old LaDronal Hamilton Jr., was also killed during the exchange of gunfire, and a third victim, a 17-year-old male, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Karmello, known affectionately as 'Mello,' was a resident of Blue Springs who had graduated from Blue Springs High School in 2022. Described by his family as having a quiet yet vibrant spirit, he was pursuing studies in Business Management at Kansas City Kansas Community College at the time of his death. His obituary highlighted his love for basketball and his smooth, kind-hearted nature, noting that he was a 'beacon of light' for his friends and family.
Law enforcement identified and apprehended suspects in connection with the double homicide. Marquis Earl Lee Savannah, a 19-year-old from Raymore, was charged in the killing of LaDronal Hamilton Jr. Prosecutors alleged that Savannah charged at Hamilton during the fight, picked up a dropped rifle, and fired multiple shots. In March 2025, Savannah pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action, receiving a 25-year prison sentence. Authorities also identified a second suspect, a 17-year-old juvenile, who was accused of pulling a handgun and firing the shots that killed Karmello Matlock.
