On March 11, 2021, officers from the Blue Springs Police Department were dispatched to a residence in Blue Springs, Missouri, to conduct a welfare check after receiving reports of concern for the occupants. When repeated attempts to make contact with anyone inside the home failed, a tactical team was deployed to gain entry. Upon entering the residence, law enforcement officials discovered a tragic scene involving two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
Inside the home, authorities
found 46-year-old Denine Latrece McCord, a female, who had already succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. They also located a second individual, identified as 57-year-old Joseph Patterson, who was suffering from critical gunshot wounds but was still alive. Emergency medical personnel transported Patterson to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Despite medical intervention, he died from his injuries later that Friday.
Investigators processed the scene and canvassed the area for witnesses to piece together the events leading up to the violence. Following the initial inquiry, the Blue Springs Police Department described the incident as a murder-suicide. Due to the death of the suspected perpetrator, no arrests were made, and no charges were filed in connection with the case. The investigation concluded that the shooting was an isolated domestic incident with no further threat to the public.
