In a tragic incident on the night of June 12, 2023, a 27-year-old woman, Keyanna Brown, was fatally shot in Bayonne, New Jersey. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office reported that the shooting took place inside an apartment located at 331 Avenue E. Bayonne Police received a 911 call about the shooting at approximately 11:35 p.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Keyanna Brown with a gunshot wound to her upper body. She was pronounced dead at the scene just after midnight on June 13, 2023.
The investigation into the death of the young woman quickly led to the identification and arrest of a suspect. Authorities charged Keyanna Brown’s father, 52-year-old Errol Brown, also of Bayonne, with her murder. He was also charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Following his arrest, Errol Brown was taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility to await his first court appearance.
In a subsequent development, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office announced that Errol Brown had died while in custody. On February 15, 2024, he collapsed in his cell at the Hudson County Correctional Facility. Despite receiving immediate medical attention from officers and on-site medical staff, and being transported to Jersey City Medical Center, he was pronounced dead that afternoon. While the official cause of his death was pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner's Office, authorities stated that foul play was not suspected. The investigation into his death was handed over to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, as is standard procedure for in-custody deaths in New Jersey.
