In the early morning hours of July 5, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the post-holiday calm in a Paterson, New Jersey neighborhood, leaving two men dead, including 17-year-old Issaih Rios. The fatal shooting occurred around 2:40 a.m. near the intersection of Jersey and Oliver streets. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Rios and a 26-year-old man, both from Paterson, with multiple gunshot wounds.
Both victims were rushed to St.
Joseph's University Medical Center for treatment, but their injuries proved to be too severe, and they were pronounced dead. In addition to the two fatalities, three other men, ages 19, 19, and 24, also sustained non-fatal gunshot wounds in the same incident. Two of the injured men transported themselves to St. Joseph's, while the third was treated at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Authorities from the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office and the Paterson Police Department are actively investigating the shooting. While no specific motive for the violence has been officially released, Paterson's mayor suggested that it could have stemmed from a dispute that escalated from Fourth of July celebrations. As of late July 2023, no suspects had been publicly identified, and no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting that claimed the lives of Issaih Rios and the other man. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have urged anyone with information to come forward.
